Although I am portuguese and actually live in Portugal, my first choice in music IS NOT fado. I like fado just as I like other kinds of music such as soul music, jazz, bossa nova, pop, etc. Mariza is a great singer, one of the best in Portugal and in the whole world nowadays. I already owned the CD "Terra" which I found to be very good (her best to date in my opinion). I was absolutely astonished when I saw and heard this DVD. Awesome! And what I found more interesting is the fact of being played with other instruments rather than with the portuguese guitar, acoustic guitar and bass only. In fact the drums and percussion, the piano, the trumpet add something that makes this kind of music much more interesting. I don't care if it's called fado or whatever name it is. I'm not purist. To me this concert sounds just beautiful.
My favourite tunes on this DVD are "Tasco da Mouraria" and "Morada aberta" (both composed by Rui Veloso), more on a jazzy groove, "Beijo de saudade", a fabulous fado/morna from Cabo Verde, "Vozes do Mar", "Recurso", "Chuva", "Maria Lisboa", "Cavaleiro Monge", "Ó gente da minha terra" all excellent tunes penned by some of the best composers there are in Portugal.
The concert layout is superb with the stage on the center, makes it much more intimate. The players are excellent, the young portuguese guitarist Angelo Freire is a great musician, as well as the acoustic guitarist Diogo Clemente (a great composer too) and the experienced Marino Freitas. Vicky is one of the best drummers in Portugal nowadays. Laurent Filipe is perhaps the best portuguese trumpet player (although he was born in Brasil, almost by accident), with the american jazz school. Ruben Alves is also a young great pianist, a Rui Veloso specialist.(Review by Virgolino Luis)
