Although I am portuguese and actually live in Portugal, my first choice in music IS NOT fado. I like fado just as I like other kinds of music such as soul music, jazz, bossa nova, pop, etc. Mariza is a great singer, one of the best in Portugal and in the whole world nowadays. I already owned the CD "Terra" which I found to be very good (her best to date in my opinion). I was absolutely astonished when I saw and heard this DVD. Awesome! And what I found more interesting is the fact of being played with other instruments rather than with the portuguese guitar, acoustic guitar and bass only. In fact the drums and percussion, the piano, the trumpet add something that makes this kind of music much more interesting. I don't care if it's called fado or whatever name it is. I'm not purist. To me this concert sounds just beautiful.
My favourite tunes on this DVD are "Tasco da Mouraria" and "Morada aberta" (both composed by Rui Veloso), more on a jazzy groove, "Beijo de saudade", a fabulous fado/morna from Cabo Verde, "Vozes do Mar", "Recurso", "Chuva", "Maria Lisboa", "Cavaleiro Monge", "Ó gente da minha terra" all excellent tunes penned by some of the best composers there are in Portugal.
The concert layout is superb with the stage on the center, makes it much more intimate. The players are excellent, the young portuguese guitarist Angelo Freire is a great musician, as well as the acoustic guitarist Diogo Clemente (a great composer too) and the experienced Marino Freitas. Vicky is one of the best drummers in Portugal nowadays. Laurent Filipe is perhaps the best portuguese trumpet player (although he was born in Brasil, almost by accident), with the american jazz school. Ruben Alves is also a young great pianist, a Rui Veloso specialist.(Review by Virgolino Luis)

The Portuguese folk music form fado has gained international recognition in recent years thanks to the stellar work of young ladies Cristina Branco, Mariza, Misia and the late Amalia Rodrigues, grand dame of fadistas. This 19-track collection of previously released material goes well beyond showcasing modern fado divas---also included here are a healthy helping of the often overlooked male singers and famous older tracks by artists who may not still be with us, such as Fernando Mauricio, Maria Teresa de Noronha and Herminia Silva.

The album features a nicely varied line-up----only Antonio Chainho gets two songs, and that's because his feature different singers. Promising newcomers come in the form of Ana Moura and Joana Amendoeira. Some things old, some things new, all of it borrowed and all of it blue, the Rough Guide to Fado will go a long way towards expanding the fado universe for neophytes, and it's a fine reminder that the passion of this relatively well-defined style is not one dimensional. ~ Tad Hendrickson, Amazon

Not to be outdone in Iberian song by their own flamenco albums, in 2004 the Rough Guide series released The Rough Guide to Fado, an album that consciously looks only at the Lisbon and Coimbra traditions, and focuses on their differences to a degree. The album opens with Antуnio Zambujo, one of the newer stars with a touch of the cante tradition included in his song. An Amalia protйgй follows, as does guitarrada star Antуnio Chainho. The powerful Cristina Branco comes soon after, followed by traditional format singer Vicente Da Camara (a relative of the great Maria Teresa de Noronha, no less). Artur Paredes, the very inventor of the Coimbra guitar traditions, is given a prominent spot in the middle of the album, joined by the master Amalia herself. The iconoclast Maria Da Fe has a moment in the light, and after a few others the venerable Maria Teresa De Noronha takes a turn. The album finishes on some of the newer voices of the tradition, from both sides of fado. Between the old and new, and the traditional and revolutionary, the album finds a good balance of sounds. The vocals are constantly worthwhile, as they are really the soul of fado, a music known almost entirely for its soul. Likewise, the regrettably few tracks of guitarrada here hail from the greatest names of the tradition. There are a few other noteworthy fado albums to be had already on the market, but this one is easily included as one of the better compilations, particularly for beginning listeners. ~ Adam Greenberg, CDUniverse

Márcio Faraco - O Tempo (2011)

Márcio Faraco - O Tempo (2011)
mp3 320 Kbps | 40 min | 92 MB | Cover
Genre: world, folk, bossa | Label: Le chant du monde

For all those who’ve heard it, ‘Famous Blue Raincoat’, a song taken from Songs of Love & Hate, is the Anglo-Saxon song of the century. If you want every country to have its Leonard Cohen, then Brazil certainly has one in the form of Márcio Faraco. Each one of his songs is exemplary in its finesse, its fragile balance between gentleness and seriousness. What seems like nonchalance and some kind of detachment are just a way of “taking the ear in” thought up by an artist who excels in the art of the sketch. Tenderness, respect for others and a quiet sense of reserve are the marks of Márcio Faraco’s distinctive style, one free of pathos but with traces of his illustrious influences, João Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes.

‘O Tempo’ – Time – evokes the primitive sound of certain Portuguese music – the longing expressed by fado, mixed with African and Cuban sounds. The themes are always autobiographical, leading here to an intimate journey through time and memory. Hence the title ‘Constantina’ for one theme, referring to Márcio’s old minder, a humble woman he imagines discovering the sea for the first time through his eyes… she who in fact has never seen it. Most of the lyrics here have been jointly written with a variety of songwriters so as to “change worlds now and then”, but as far as the musicians go, everything functions on the principle of continuity. And indeed, highly talented percussionist Julio Gonçalves, who’s been playing with Márcio for 20 years, was invited to take part in the album.
Of course, Márcio made his recording in Rio, the perfect place for the purity of his guitar-voice, a tightrope exercise if ever there was one. But if Márcio was to win his wager, it was vital to be in the country of João Gilberto – unquestionably the king of this style. Yet nothing was simple, because he had to make two trips beforehand to take the six guitars he wanted to record with! (Màrcio recorded part of this album on a Brazilian peasant guitar with 10 double strings, known as the viola caipira). What’s more, the studio was in Niterói, on the other side of the bay of Rio, and Márcio had to drive 50 kilometres every day to get there. When he came back, often late at night, via the Rio/ Niterói bridge, it was strangely deserted everywhere. In fact, since a government-organised violent campaign against drug smuggling was launched there, no-one dares go there at night. A weird background indeed for such a sunlit album, serene, at peace with itself and the world.
