The second of two outstanding albums from this short lived UK band. For fans of 10cc, Roxy Music, and the lighter moments of City Boy, Cafe Jacques has much to offer. It’s amazed me over the years how overlooked this band has been among music fans and while I prefer the debut Round The Back, for those with an interest in ‘Art Rock’ from the late 70’s- this is a great place to start.
International uses more in the keyboard department than the debut and granted the production has a bit more snap, ‘crackle’ and pop, although what I loved about Cafe Jacques on both albums is they never went overboard commercially. While the songs are relatively short, nothing here really had radio potential even as it was in 1978. It’s just good solid music with a pop edge, well written and played reminding me as mentioned above of 10cc, but also some of legendary producer, singer/ song writer Rupert Holmes (produced The Strawbs among others and beyond his most 'infamous' tune- the The Pina Colada Song!) early work and PhD, a UK band who would owe much to Cafe Jacques a few years later with a couple excellent 'major label' albums released in the early 80’s. Good music lasts forever and I hope my CD copy of International lasts as long! Highly recommended!
