The third in the ‘contemporary’ series focuses on modern day Afrobeat. Heavily influenced by Fela Kuti including the organ riffs and large horn sections, the music sound vibrant and contemporary and dated at the same time. The comp kicks off with the blistering ‘Crache La Douleur’ from Fanga, but there are so many great grooves mainly with that Kuti like vibe. Jojo Quo And His Challengers ‘Every Woman is Good Woman’ is such an infectious upbeat song propelled by a glorious horn run. Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble hit a frenetic groove with ‘P.D.P’, whish is sustained by Aphrodesia’s ‘Special Girl’. Afro Beat, the original hybrid of Jazz, Funk and West African highlife created by Fela Ransome-Kuti and Tony Allen in the late 1960s, is everything else than dead in 2011: Open your mind and ears and enjoy the exciting sounds of Odu, Afromotive, Jojo Quo & his Challengers and all the others. Fela declared his music “the progressive music of the future”. Well, the future has come. This is Contemporary Afro Beat.
